Lantern Making Workshops

Dumfries House, Scotland - May 2023

I was invited by author Vivian French to join the Boswell Book Festival 2023 and run two creative workshops as part of their Children’s Festival.

Held in the grounds of Dumfries House, the Festival is one of the most well-established cultural events in Scotland and the Children’s Festival often features some of the best and most popular children’s authors, illustrators, and performers.

I was asked to host an artist-led workshop where kids were taught how to make kites and lanterns out of willow stems, tissue and craft paper. The activities were designed to fit different abilities, ranging from simpler paper kites, to more elaborate willow lanterns. After each construction, the children had the chance to decorate their creations with colourful paper and make their own unique design.

I also joined Vivian French in a Map Making activity, inspired by her book ‘Maps, from Anna to Zane’.

Queen’s Walk, London - July 2023

On my return to London, I ran a week long children’s lantern making workshop on the Queen’s Walk, sponsored by County Hall Arts.

Once again, children were encouraged to build, paste and decorate their own lanterns using willow and tissue paper. The finished creations are currently displayed in the County Hall building at the Riverside Entrance.
