A Painter in Kyoto

In September 2022, I was invited by County Hall Arts to create a collection of 25 landscape paintings of Kyoto. This residency fundamentally changed the way I observe a landscape. Painting outdoors demanded close attention and in an unfamiliar place, every detail feels significant. You notice what is different, but also what feels familiar. Each painting became a way of recording not only the landscape itself, but my experience of discovering it. Working en-plein air also transformed my approach to painting. I had to paint quickly and make confident decisions, capturing the essence of a scene before it disappeared.
